Bomb Squad

Brown - Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad

The Brown - Outagamie Bomb Squad was formed in 1999 to address a critical need in Northeast Wisconsin. The closest available certified bomb technicians to this area previously had to be dispatched from Milwaukee or Dane Counties
. The time delay resulted in a significant threat to the public and also considerable economic disruption to the community.

The Sheriffs of both the Counties joined in an effort to develop a bomb squad to serve the two counties. The vision of the Sheriffs was to achieve a level of service that was cost effective to the communities. The service model envisioned a team of trained officers who would provide a rapid response to an event which potentially involved biological, nuclear, incendiary, chemical or explosive devices. After considerable effort on the part of both the Sheriff’s Offices, the bomb squad became fully operational in December 1999.

Bomb Squad Technicians were sent to school for certification at the Redstone Arsenal Hazardous Devices School in Huntsville, Alabama. The Hazardous Device school is a collaborative effort between the FBI and the United States Army. The Hazardous Devices School is four weeks in length, a fifth week was added to the school in 1999 that addresses Weapons of Mass Destruction and terrorism. The Bomb Technicians are also Hazardous Materials Technicians to address the terrorist threats in the community.

Donations in excess of $40,000 from throughout Northeastern Wisconsin has allowed the bomb squad to purchase all the necessary equipment including a bomb truck, bomb suits, a disrupter, a portable x-ray machine, a containment trailer, and storage magazines. The FBI has mandated that this equipment is necessary to handle explosive related incidents.

The team has responded to numerous calls in Brown and Outagamie Counties. The squad has also responded to calls for assistance to communities throughout Northeast Wisconsin. These calls have included armed barricaded individuals where the through the use of the squad's robot a mediated resolution was obtained that kept the officers and subject from harm.

The Brown - Outagamie Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad provides a front line response to incidents involving, or suspected of involving, bombs, explosives and/or other shock sensitive materials. Additionally, the Bomb Squad provides those services in explosive related matters in such a manner consistent with current accepted practices.
