Parenting Resources

Parenting is an important responsibility with many challenges, and families are often looking for resources. Public health nurses are available to provide parenting education, including telephone consultation and home visitation. Information on other parenting resources in our community can also be provided. Spanish and Hmong interpreters are available. Call 448-6400 to request services.

Child & Adolescent Health Information:

  • HealthyChildren
    www.healthychildren.org is a website designed for families seeking child and adolescent health information consistent with the American Academy of Pediatrics' (AAP's) policies and guidelines. The site contains information on more than 300 topics organized into the following sections: Ages and Stages (prenatal to young adulthood), Healthy Living, Safety & Prevention, Family Life, Health Issues, News, and Tips & Tools. The Hot Topics area presents news and guidance on medication safety alerts and product recalls.

  • Healthy Futures Website - Virginia Department of Health
    Through the Bright Futures Project, explore videos on children's health and wellness information.

  • The Parent Outlet
    The Parent Outlet website is a resource to connect parents with children ages 0 to 5 to topics, including child development, parenting, child safety, health and nutrition, early learning, and community resources.

    Information hotline for Brown County services and community resources.

  • Brown County Coalition for Suicide Prevention
    The Brown County Coalition for Suicide Prevention is committed to providing education, overcoming stigma, and promoting awareness of suicide prevention for the benefit of all people in Brown County.

  • Family and Childcare Resources of N.E.W.
    Supports healthy early childhood development by offering services such as play groups, parenting classes, individual family visits, help finding quality childcare, and workshops for parents, providers and community. Bilingual Spanish staff available.

  • Howe Community Resource Center
    A place for parents and children to gather with other parents and children. Services include playgroups and parenting and literacy classes. Bilingual Spanish staff available.

Nutrition:

  • ChooseMyPlate
    USDA is replacing the food pyramid with a plate. This interactive site gives information, tips and resources for the general population, pregnant/breastfeeding women, preschoolers, and kids.

  • Food and Nutrition Service - USA
    Nutrition and physical activity information for families with school age children, including actiity sheets for children.

  • National Dairy Council
    The latest news and nutrition education materials, including downloadable fact sheets, research summaries, and tips.

  • This Summer, Eat Smart to Play Hard: A Parent's Guide
    Nutrition and physical activity information for families with school age children including activity sheets for children.

  • WIC
