Courthouse Security

The Courthouse Security Unit is a branch of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office Support Services Division, and is supervised by Lt. James Cuny.

It is further broken down into the following subsections:
  • Court Security Officers
  • Court Officers
  • Court Sergeants (3)
Courthouse Security Officers responsibilities are both considerable and important, and at the same time require a strong partnership with the courts. Courthouse security encompasses deterrence, detection, and prevention. In fulfilling this role the security staff, on average per year, responds to 16 duress alarms, 688 calls for extra security and makes 297 arrests.

Court Officers are assigned the task of transporting prisoners to and from their court hearings. This must be done in both a safe and secure manner for the prisoner, courthouse staff and the visiting public. The Court Officers must also act as a liaison between the courts and the jail, ensuring that the prisoners are transported, and on time for scheduled hearings.

Court Sergeant duties involve:
  • Processing citations issued by Brown Co. Sheriff’s Deputies as well as Wrightstown, Oneida, Pulaski, UWGB, and Hobart Police Departments.
  • Scheduling all inmate court appearances for 8 Circuit Courts and 4 Commissioner’s Courts.
  • Coordinating the movement of prisoners brought to and from Brown Co. on various Court Orders and Writs of Habeas Corpus from other county jails, and state prisons across Wisconsin.
The Brown County Sheriff’s Office will continue our efforts to be proactive in providing security for the courthouse, staff, and the visiting public through the use of a state of the art digital security system. We will continue to work closely with those agencies associated with the judicial system; Clerk of Courts Office, District Attorney’s Office, state Public Defenders Office, Judges, private attorneys, and Police Agencies.
