Crash Reconstruction

In 1985 the Brown County Sheriff’s Office became the first law enforcement agency in northeast Wisconsin to train Officers in Crash Reconstruction. The purpose was to provide surviving family members the most comprehensive explanation of how serious and fatal crashes happened. The effort also provides information for traffic safety enhancing efforts through-out the community

The Crash Reconstruction Unit consists of six officers. These officers carry out their normal duties and when paged, report to fatal or serious crashes. These officers receive specialized training in the fields of: technical crash investigation, vehicle dynamics, traffic crash reconstruction, and the computer application of crash reconstruction, including simulations. This training is some of the most challenging in the law enforcement field. The investigations can provide answers to vehicle and occupant positioning and speed at impact as well as lamps on or off and other pre-crash mechanical conditions.
