Crash Reconstruction

In 1985 the Brown County Sheriff’s Office became the first law enforcement agency in northeast Wisconsin to train Officers in Crash Reconstruction. The Crash Reconstruction Unit consists of five deputies and a lieutenant. These officers carry out their normal duties and when requested report to critical crashes. The mission of the team is victim focused to provide survivors, family members and the District Attorney’s Office the most comprehensive expert explanation of how the most serious and fatal crashes happened in our community.

Through Northwestern University and the State Patrol Academy the officers receive specialized training in the fields of: technical crash investigation, vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics and traffic crash reconstruction. The investigations completed by the crash reconstruction unit can provide answers to vehicle and occupant positioning, speeds at impact, lamp or signal use, and other pre- crash driver, roadway or mechanical conditions.

Since 1985, the team has worked on average of 15-30 crash scenes per year, including many high profile criminal crashes that have yielded sentences up to 80 years in prison. The team continues to build on its training and expertise to remain cutting edge as technology advances. In 2013, one member became the first successful Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction (ACTAR) member, a national certification for crash reconstruction. Currently 3 members are now ACTAR certified. In 2018, the unit started using a state of the art FARO digital scanner to process scenes, being one of the first in the state to do so.
