Snow Shoe Lessons ~ Saturday, January 24 at 9:30am

Bring the entire family to learn more about this fast growing winter activity! Find out the basics of snowshoe design and function as well as tips and techniques for travel. Then we’ll strap on the shoes and go for a short hike. Space is limited so please call (920) 448-6242 to pre-register. Program cost is $3.00/person, plus the additional snowshoe rental fee of $2 per student and $4 per adult or please feel free to bring your own snowshoes for no additional fee.

Snowshoe Discover Hike ~ Saturday, January 31 at 9:30am

Hit the snow and explore the off-trail areas of the Preserve in winter on snowshoes with our Naturalist! Learn more about the sport of snowshoeing while looking for winter wildlife and their sign. If there isn’t any snow, then we’ll go on foot! Recommended for ages 7 and over since we will be trudging for almost a mile! Program cost is $3.00/person, plus the additional snowshoe rental fee of $2 per student and $4 per adult or please feel free to bring your own snowshoes for no additional fee. Moonlight Snowshoe Hikes ~ Saturday, February 7 at 7:00pm

Join us for an outdoor adventure you’ll not soon forget! Snowshoe the woods and fields of the Preserve as we explore our nighttime wonderland. Space is limited so please call (920) 448-6242 to pre-register. Program cost is $3.00/person, plus the additional snowshoe rental fee of $2 per student and $4 per adult or please feel free to bring your own snowshoes for no additional fee.

Basic Winter Survival Skills Workshop ~ Saturday, February 28 9am-12:30pm

Have you ever thought about what you would do if you were suddenly stuck in a remote location without cellphone reception? How would you care for yourself or families well-being? During the workshop you will be able to identify a survival situation and then given the chance to demonstrate basic fire making skills, shelter building, water securement, safe ice travel, basic identification of cold weather related injuries, along with so much more. You will be provided with a light lunch to cook over your own fire. Dress for the weather, two hours will be spent outside practicing and learning these basic skills. All materials will be provided. $15 per person, recommended age 8 and older. Space is limited to the first 25 people so call to pre-register at (920) 448-6242.

Build A Bluebird House ~ Saturday, March 7 & Saturday, March 14 at 10:00am

This family oriented event will explain the reasoning and values of constructing nest boxes for bluebirds. Participants will construct a house from a cedar kit which can be used to attract birds to your backyard. Bring along a hammer and your enthusiasm! Even youngsters with adult supervision can easily put these boxes together. A $10 fee per box will be collected the day of the program. Space is limited so call to pre-register at (920) 448-6242. No organized groups please.

Maple Syrupin'...A Celebration of Spring ~ Saturday, March 28 from 9:30am-3:00pm

Explore the age-old tradition of making maple syrup with the entire family. Stop in at the Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to learn more about this fascinating process. Fun and informative, this day will feature educational stations through the "sugar bush", a close-up look at our evaporating cabin and ice cream with our own Barkhausen Maple Syrup. No registration is necessary for this program - just come on out. Fees for the program are $3 for students, $5 for adults or $15 for families. Hope to see you there!

Building A Bat House ~ Saturday, April 11 & Saturday, April 18 at 10:00am
Don't like mosquitoes? Be ready for those little pests this summer with nature's own bug zappers! Join the Naturalists at Barkhausen to build a box that will attract bats to your backyard. Building a bat house is a fun project that the whole family will enjoy working on together. Bring along a hammer and we'll provide the rest of the materials to build your bat house! The cost is $10 per box. Space is limited so call to pre-register at (920) 448-6242. No organized groups please.
