BROWN COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE OFFICIAL REPORTS

OBTAINING A COPY OF A REPORT

Records of the Sheriff’s are available for public release under Federal and Wisconsin Open Records laws. This means that at times information must be redacted (removed) from the report or the report may not be available for release due to such restrictions as an ongoing investigation, or the presence of personal, juvenile, medical or emergency detention information. Even when the report can be released, most reports are not available for 7–10 days past when the incident was reported.

The Sheriff’s Office will make every attempt to be transparent in its release of information but we are restricted by these Federal and State regulations. The Sheriff’s Office has worked in close cooperation with the Brown County Corporation Counsel’s office to develop its policies involving the release of records.

See below for a copy of a memo to the public from the Sheriff with details on this issue.

Please follow the below procedures to make your request.

CONTACTING THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE FOR A REQUEST

IMPORTANT:

If you are requesting a Sheriff’s Office report that pertains to you personally, you will receive a copy of the report with all your “personal information” contained thereon but all other personal information pertaining to other individuals/drivers may be redacted (blacked out). This means that you must properly identify yourself when requesting a Sheriff’s Office record so that we can locate the record pertaining solely to you. You can only receive an entire, unredacted copy if you properly execute the DPPA Permissible Use Records Request Form (listed below) attesting to your eligibility for one or more of the permissible uses listed thereon, or you provide a written and notarized DPPA Personal Release Form (listed below) signed by each person mentioned in the Sheriff’s Office report.

1. Call the Records Department at (920) 448-4200; or
2. Fax your request to the Sheriff’s Office Records Department (920) 448-4206; or
3. Come in person to the Sheriff’s Offices at 2684 Development Drive, Green Bay WI 54311; or
4. Mail a written request to the Sheriff’s Office Records Department at the address listed in #3 above.

When making your request specifying the date of the crash/incident, location, parties’ names, and the nature of the police call. Please provide as many of these items as you can. If you have an Incident report number (starts with abbreviated year, 2013 = “13”), please include that number with your request.

TRAFFIC CRASH / ACCIDENT REPORTS:

Reportable accidents are those which involve either a personal injury or have over $1,000 worth of damage to one or more vehicles. Non Reportable accidents are those without injuries and damage of less than $1,000 to each vehicle.

Insurance companies and licensed attorneys may hold a permissible use under the Federal law and can obtain complete traffic crash reports (without black-outs). Motorists may wish to first contact their insurance agency or lawyer and have them obtain the report on the driver’s/passenger’s behalf.

Unredacted (without black-outs) traffic accident/crash reports can also be obtained from the Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation by calling (608) 266-8753. They do bill for this service.

ATTORNEYS AND INSURANCE COMPANIES:

Insurance firms and lawyers need not complete the DPPA Permissible Use Records Request Form if their requests are signed, on letterhead of some kind, and identify the insured (or represented) with a name and/or a claim number. NO ONE is allowed access to unredacted reports in order to seek future clients.

FEES

The Sheriff's Office does charge for services during the release of records. See the below Fee Schedule for details.
